18:00 - 19:00

University Of Bath

The literature is clear that parents – including the parents of teenagers – can and do have an important, even a vital impact on their children’s learning and educational achievement.

This talk will give an overview of the research into parental engagement in children’s learning, and move on to discuss what it is that parents do  -- and can do – to support children’s outcomes and achievements.

Janet is a lecturer in Educational Leadership and Management. She has been an active university teacher and researcher for a number of years, working on a wide range of issues, such as federations of schools, the evaluation of the impact of CPD in schools, the implementation of workforce reform, and a multisector project looking at organisations which perform beyond expectations in education, sport and business.
Her most recent work has mainly been around parents’ engagement in their children’s learning, particularly as a means of school improvement.  Her most recent book,  Narrowing the Achievement Gap: Parental Engagement in Children’s Learning, explores how the gap between children from different backgrounds can be narrowed by supporting parents’ engagement with learning.  The book is based on research from the field, as well as Janet’s own work, such as a Toolkit for Parental Engagement.
